I heard that our local food pantry (West Valley Food Pantry) was short volunteers when they were forced to put all of their volunteers over age 65 on hiatus due to the Covid outbreak in Los Angeles County. Inspired by Change4Good and Tyler and Kyle Stricof, I jumped in to volunteer just as the food bank was shifting operations from walk-in to drive through in an effort to keep everyone safe during the pandemic. With my school closed down and tennis season cancelled, I spent my PE period last spring and then all summer helping out. I unloaded the trucks when deliveries from various grocery stores and the central food bank came in, packed fresh produce boxes and delivered food directly to people’s cars. It was an eye -opening experience. If you happen to live in the San Fernando Valley (Los Angeles County) and want to get involved, fill out the form here. They need volunteers now more than ever, as school begins for the high school students who provided manual labor all summer.
